BOOK REVIEW

LUMAYO KA NGA SA AKIN (Stay Away From Me)
Bob Ong
Grade: 4 out of 5

If you are looking for a trilogy book rolled into one, then this book is definitely for you. It is a three-part book which offers satirical comedy from beginning to end. Providing old antics mixed with new cranks, Lumayo Ka Nga Sa Akin tackles not only of personal issues but also political and social awareness. It's genre is a combination of action, romance, comedy, horror, suspense, thrill, animation, advertising, music videos and a lot more.

Bob Ong, known for his comic yet striking comedy, has written the book in a way that readers would have to make a double take to lengthen the comic experience. Lumayo Ka Nga Sa Akin promises not only to tickle your funny bones but also to instill real-life lessons and moral values.

Most of the time, Ong tries to remind Filipinos their traditional values they used to live up with. This was delivered in a way that a reader would laugh it out, but would pause for awhile and think if it does happen in reality.

Although, there were times when the jokes seemed like they were cutout from newspaper write-ups; however, Ong managed to pull it off by backing it up with a funny nonsense comedy.

Lumayo Ka Man Sa Akin is an ideal comic illustration converted into scripts, with effects and other superficial elements. You wouldn't be ashamed of getting your own copy, and once read, shelving it beside your Shakespeare collections.

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 61

It’s been almost a year when I left the City of Buenaventura. A lot of things had changed. Some places, where I used to go to, were closed down, while others were upgraded.

I felt like it was my first time to visit that place. It’s the place where I was born and where I grew up… and it’ll be the place where me and my newly born baby Justin will live together.

I called Isabelle that I’m back in the city and that I need a nanny for my baby so that I could go back to work as soon as possible. She was glad to hear from me again, although we constantly talk on the phone when I was still in Venice.

I also called Erica to let her know that I’m already in Buenaventura. I found out that Stella is back from New Zealand and that Stephanie is about to get married. Stephanie’s boyfriend just proposed to her last week. We decided to meet. It’ll serve as a reunion for us.

The next person I called was Aaron. He was so surprised to hear from me. It had been a year since the last time we talked.

“How are you?” he asked.

“I’m fine. I had a healthy baby boy. His name is Justin. I wish you could meet him,” I said.

“Really? That’s cool. I’m excited to see him,” he said.

“H-how’s Stephen? Did you hear anything from him?” I asked.

“I have not heard from him since you left. I thought he’d find you in Venice after he found where you were, but he said he failed. From that day on, I have not heard anything from him. I don’t know what happened to him. Besides, I constantly travel to Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia for business summits,” Aaron answered.

“I see. You were so busy with work then. You might not find yourself a girlfriend,” I jokingly said.

“You think so? Guess what? I’m getting married,” he said.

“Really? I’m happy for you. Congratulations!”

“Yes. I’m marrying your best friend Stephanie.”

“What?!!” I shrieked in disbelief. I was so surprised that I woke baby Justin up. I went to him and tried to put him back to sleep before I spoke, “we really need to see each other. I didn’t know you went out together. This calls for a celebration. We decided to have a reunion. I wish you could join us. I’ll bring my baby with me.”

“Sure. I’d have to tell Stephanie. You know her. She’s not into surprises,” Aaron said. After that, we said our goodbyes. I was really happy for Stephanie and Aaron. I didn’t know they would click together. I didn’t even know they were going out. But despite all of these, I was saddened by the fact that I had lost yet another important man of my life… Stephen. I wonder how he is doing.

Erica called me up and set a date with the other girls at Keep Cole. She said it’s a newly opened child-friendly Italian restaurant. I have to bring Justin with me, so I agreed with her idea.
Around 8PM, everyone was there already – Stella, Erica, Stephanie, Aaron, me and Justin. We were all having fun. They enjoyed the sight of my baby. Stephanie and Aaron can’t help but to keep playing with Justin, while me, Erica, and Stella are keeping up with each other. All of a sudden, Justin cried so I gave him a bottle of milk.

“Aaron! Buddy! How are you?” Everyone paused and were silent for a moment. I wondered why. They were all looking at the same direction. I was puzzled.

“Nikki?” the same person asked. I looked at the direction where everyone was looking. I was surprised to see Stephen standing behind me. It was all real. I was so surprised that I almost dropped Justin’s feeding bottle. Stephen was able to catch it from my hand.

“S-s-tephen?” I stuttered.

He gave me a hug, a tight one. I can’t move. I was still in shock. He looked at me and brushed off the little hair on my face. He then hugged me for the second time. It’s obvious how he missed me so much.

“All these times, Nick, I’ve been thinking about you and us. There have been what ifs and hows and whys after you left, and I can’t seem to find the answers to all of those questions. Now, that you’re back, I don’t have to find those answers anymore…” he paused. He was teary eyed already. ” I don’t have to find those answers, because those questions just banished in an instant.”

I was also crying. I can’t say anything at all. He cupped my face with his both hands and kissed me. It was soft but deep. I didn’t try to protest. I let my emotions take control of me. I kissed him back, a deep one. Just like Stephen, I missed being with him, being in his arms… hugging, cuddling, and even making love. That’s how I missed him. Suddenly, Justin cried. I didn’t know how long we’ve been kissing, but Justin’s cry parted me and Stephen from kissing. Stephen looked at Justin. He then flashed a smile on his face.

He recognized Justin as his own child. After all, Justin looked so much like him. He took the baby from his carrycot and carry him in his arms. He was very delighted to see Justin. He smiled at me and gave me a soft kiss. He doesn’t have to say anything. I could tell how happy he was to finally meet his son. He was amazed how Reese and Mark helped me with my final days of pregnancy. Everyone in the restaurant was in a very light mood. And then I found out, the name of the restaurant was named after me. Stephen owned the place.

From then on, we lived a very peaceful life… or so I thought.

THE END

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 60

I was already in the hospital when I woke up. Reese was sitting beside the stretcher, reading a magazine. She stopped reading when she found out I was already awake.

“What happened?” I asked her.

“You collapsed at the grocery store. The doctor said you were a little fatigued. You need to have more rest since you’re pregnant,” she answered. “It was a good thing Mark was able to catch you. He’s at the waiting room with baby Giselle. Are you feeling better?”

I nodded. I didn’t expect all of the things I had heard from Reese at the grocery store. I know I should be mad at her for breaking me and Stephen into pieces, but I can’t get mad at her.

“Can you tell me what really happened between you and Stephen?” I asked.

She took a deep breath and sighed.

“The truth is, Stephen didn’t get me pregnant. It was Mark who got me pregnant. Right after Stephen left for Buenaventura, I found out that I was a month pregnant. So I took it as an opportunity to get Stephen back because I know how he wanted to start his own family. I thought maybe it could trigger him to have me back. I loved him so much and though I know it would be too impossible for me to have him back because of what I did to him, I still tried what I could do. I know I was bitchy and all, but the only thing that mattered to me was to get Stephen back,” Reese paused.

Suddenly, I saw tears from her eyes. I don’t know why she was crying, but I know there’s something that bothered her.

“Then last year,” she continued, “my mom and dad had an accident. My mom was revived and survived the car crash, but my dad didn’t. I went to see both of them, but it was too late for me to see dad. Mom had several injuries and dad was in comatose for weeks, until he finally gave up. That was when I realized how hard it is to lose someone you love most. After the accident, I can see myself in Stephen… like how devastated he was of losing you. Then, I found out that my Stephen, Mark Stephen, went to Buenaventura to search for me. I didn’t know how, but he was able to get acquainted with Stephen. That’s when he told Stephen about my pregnancy. You see, Mark and Stephen used to be best friends and that was destroyed because of my selfishness. When I lost my dad, that was when I regret all of the things I did to both of them… and to you Nikki. That’s why I’m apologizing to you because I caused you so much pain.” Reese was already crying.

I held her hand and smiled at her. At least, I know how it all started and that she’s already telling the truth. To be honest, if Reese didn’t come into my life under such circumstance, she could have been a good friend.

“It’s alright,” I told her. “What’s in the past is already in the past. Let’s try to bury that and start anew.” I smiled at her and she smiled back at me.

From then on, we became good friends. In fact, Reese and Mark helped me with my last month of pregnancy. I didn’t know they had plans of staying in Venice for good. Well, at least, I have some friends around to help me with my labor. Reese also told me that she wants to venture in a business with me. I told her maybe we could be business partners once I open the new business I was planning. It’s fashion boutique for little women and teenagers. She showed her interest in it and studied a course in fashion for her to help me.

After my labor, I decided to go back to Buenaventura and had to deal with the businesses that were left behind… and probably close whatever there is that needs closure.

I froze as Reese called the man behind me. I didn’t expect to see Stephen in such event. I thought she was alone. I didn’t think she’d be with Stephen. My heart was beating so fast. I didn’t know what to do or how should I deal with Steve. Finally, Reese spoke.

“Nikki, this is my husband, Stephen. Stephen, this is Nikki. She’s a friend. She’s the one I told you about,” Reese said.

I grasped for air. I took a deep breathe and turned around to finally meet Stephen after almost a year. But I was surprised to see yet another familiar face.

“Mark?” I shrieked in disbelief. It was really embarrassing, but I was plainly surprised to see Mark instead of Stephen.

“Nikki?! How are you? It’s been awhile,” Mark shook my hand. Just like me, he was also a little surprised to see me.

I was quivering and was really confused. Awhile ago, I thought Reese was talking about Stephen, yet she was talking of Mark all along.

“You know each other?” Reese asked. She was surprised as well.

“I met her in City of Buenaventura when I went there, looking for you,” answered Mark.

“I-I t-t-thought you mean Steve? Stephen?” I stuttered.

“Yes. This is Stephen, my husband. He’s Mark Stephen,” Reese and Mark smiled at me.

“So, what happened to you and Stephen?” I asked.

“We broke up. Things didn’t work out for us,” she answered.

“B-b-but what about the baby?”

“Baby Giselle is fine,” she said. She looked at Mark for a while and started speaking, “you know what, Nick. There’s also another thing you need to know.”

I gulped. I bet this will be another surprised that would hit me. Reese paused for a minute, trying to gather words whatever she’s going to tell me. An elderly woman stopped and asked where she could get a Parmesan cheese.

“You can get one at the Deli Department, ma’am,” Mark answered. The woman smiled and thanked him.

“Nick, Stephen loves you so much. When I asked him to marry me because I was pregnant, he was very hesitant about it because he doesn’t want to hurt you in any way,” Reese paused again. “B-but I threatened him about the baby. I know I was wrong, but I was so desperate to have him back. I know I’ve caused you so much trouble and I am really sorry for that. This may not be the right time or right place to apologize to you, but this is the best time for you to know that Stephen has been loving you.”

I was in awe. I can’t find the right words to tell Reese. I want to get mad at her but I can’t.

“B-b-but the b-b-baby?” I asked. That’s all I had in mind.

“I am the real father of baby Giselle,” Mark said. It surprised me so much. I can’t believe I was put in a scheme. All these times, I’ve been carrying baggage that isn’t supposed to be mine. I felt a little dizzy and suddenly lost my balance. It was a good thing Mark was able to catch me. I heard Reese calling for help. I suddenly lost my consciousness.

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 58

I’m on my final semester of my pregnancy. It wasn’t a difficult one. I had been constantly communicating with my OB-GYN and had been following her instructions and advices. It was a healthy pregnancy. I had been eating all organics and minimized my intakes of food with preservatives and artificial minerals. I took lamaze and yoga classes for pregnant women.

They said, being pregnant is difficult, especially if you have to deal it on your own. For me, it wasn’t that difficult at all. I took my pregnancy with positivity. I know it could’ve been different if Stephen was around, supporting me. But, it wouldn’t be this fulfilling if I’d continue depending on anyone for most times.

It’s already 8 in the morning. I woke up with a very light feeling. I’ve never felt such lightness before. I took a short shower and head to the supermarket to buy groceries. I had fun watching people walking around as they look at me with amusement. People have been telling me I look good with my round tummy. Truth is, I find those compliments very encouraging. It’s not that I’m being boastful or anything, but I didn’t let myself be out-of-style even if I’m pregnant. I always make it a point that I still look good even without my make up. Everyone knows a pregnant woman has to avoid cosmetic products.

I was going around the grocery store when suddenly, I saw a familiar face. My heart pumped so fast. I recognized the face so easily. I had battling thoughts inside my head. Should I approach that person from afar? Or should I take a different direction and avoid that person? Finally, I decided to go to that person and have a small talk.

“Reese?”

She turned around and was surprised to see me. She was pushing a cart while wearing a baby carrier.

“Nikki?”

“Yes. Hi! How are you? When did you have your labor?” I asked.

“J-just last month. When are you going to have yours?”

“I’m due next month. Baby boy?” I smiled.

“No. A girl. Isn’t she cute?” she moved a little closer for me to see the baby.

“She’s lovely. She looks so much like you.”

“Thank you,” she said.

“You’re here for a vacation?” I wondered.

“Yes. What about you? I heard you were gone for almost year now.”

“Yeah. I’ve been here since last year. I took a crash course in fashion for about four months,” I told her. “Are you here alone?”

“My husband Steve is here. We had to buy groceries for my baby and other basic needs.”

“H-how are you and Stephen going?” I asked hesitantly.

“Oh, my husband’s fine. He’s been a good dad to my daughter. He’s here. Steve!” she called someone from behind me. I froze for a while. I don’t think I’m ready to see Stephen with my condition right now. Is it because I still haven’t moved on?

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 57

Venice

I went home with a heavy heart. I was able to find the address that Erica gave me. I thought I would be able to see Nikki again, but then, I was wrong. I found out Nikki had left. The landlord didn’t know where she went. I don’t know how I could find her. Perhaps, I won’t be able to find her anymore. Maybe, it’s true what they say. You can’t find a person who doesn’t want to be found.

After everything that had happened, I thought I could end up happy with Nikki. I wish to explain everything to her, but I won’t be able to do that anymore. She’s gone with our baby. I wish I could have done more to make her stay, but it was all too late.

I left Venice with disappointment. I wish to go back to my hometown and wait for Nikki to come back. It won’t be easy, but it’s the only thing I could do for now.

I know it would be very hard to accept that she’s gone, but the thought of her having our baby is the only thing that I could hold on to. Someday, I would be able to see her again. By then, I hope to show her my love and would be able to fight for her.

*****

New York

It wasn’t easy to tell mom and dad that I’m pregnant, but I was glad that they accepted it with a light heart. Dad was happy for me and was very much excited about it. Mom, on the other hand, was a little dramatic, but she was very certain that I’d make a good mom.

I didn’t expect that they’d accept it that easy. As they said, I’m of the right age to become a parent. After all, I have been a responsible daughter to them.

I explained everything about my pregnancy and didn’t hide anything. I didn’t miss a single detail about it. I told them everything they have to know… about Stephen, Aaron, Mark, Reese, and the whole thing about my trip to Venice and why I decided to stay there until the baby is born.

“So, you’re going back to that place after you deliver the baby?” dad asked.

“Yes, dad. I will be gone for a year. I don’t know how my businesses would do while I’m gone. Although, I have good people who take care of the businesses for me, but I have other things to take care as well,” I answered.

“We understand. Are you going to visit us in Paris?” mom asked.

“Maybe, mom. I am not sure yet. I will be taking a crash course for four months in Venice. I don’t think I’d still be able to travel by the time I finish my course. Besides, I will be due around that time.”

“Okay. Well, if that’s the case, then we’ll be the one to visit you in Venice instead of you seeing us in Paris. I have not gone to that place for a while. I guess visiting you there won’t hurt much. Would that be okay with you?” dad suggested.

“Of course! That would be great dad. I could show you around Venice. It would be like a family bonding for us. It would be different when you’re around.” It had been awhile since we went out of the country as a family. Ever since my parents decided to stay in a different country, we weren’t able to go together. We could take this opportunity to bond.

My plan of staying in New York for a month didn’t push through. I had to go back to Venice to take care of some things. I only stayed in New York for two weeks since I still have to see my doctor. Besides, traveling by plane when pregnant is very difficult and is prohibited. I don’t want things to complicate.

When I get back to Venice, things would go back to normal. I won’t have worries anymore. I know Stephen would have already left when I get back. He doesn’t have to know anything about me anymore. I know I’d be able to raise my child well.

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 56

I finally arrived in New York. It was a frustrating ride, but I can finally breathe now. Stephen won’t be able to follow me. I knew he’d be looking for me once he finds out where I was, and I wasn’t wrong.

Erica had told him that I was in Venice. She’s my best friend, but I know Erica so well. Being a romantic-movie fanatic, I know she’d spill it. It’s just a great thing that Stephanie warned me about Stephen’s plans.

I took a cab going to Aunt Alice’s house. I had told her that I’d be coming to New York and had to spend one month here before going back to Venice. I didn’t tell her the reasons why. I just told here that I will be having a month-long vacation.

Finally, I arrived at Aunt Alice’s house. I knocked on the door thrice before I got a response.

“Nikki? Baby? Is that you?” It was mom. It had been a long time since we saw each other. I was surprised to see her.

“Mom! You’re here! I thought you’re in Paris?” I hugged her. I missed her so much. The last time I saw her was when I went to Paris two years ago. I was so occupied with work after that. “Is dad here, too?”

“Yes. He’s in the backyard with your Aunt Alice and Uncle Gene for the barbecue party. You look so fine. I miss you so much, babe.”

“I know. I miss you, too.” Mom helped me with my things as we entered the house.

“Who is it, Emma?” someone asked.

“Dad!” I run toward him. I gave him a tight hug. He braced his arms around me, too. We were on that gesture for a while. I admit, I am a “daddy’s girl”. I miss my parents so much. They’re the only family I have.

“I miss you, my little princess. How’re you doing? W-what are you doing here?”

“I’m great dad. I’m here for vacation. What about you? I thought you’re in Paris?”

“We thought of visiting your Aunt Alice. It’s been awhile since the last time we were here in New York. We even thought of giving you a surprise by visiting you in your place,” mom said.

“Oh! I’m currently in Venice right now,” I told mom and dad.

“What are you doing in Venice?” dad asked.

“I had to take care a few things. I’ve been studying new materials for the clothing line and I think I will open a new boutique by next year. So, it’s somewhat a preparation.”

“Oh. That sounds great. How long are you going to stay here?” dad guided me to the backyard. Aunt Alice and Uncle Gene was there. I gave them hugs and kisses before I answered dad.

“Well, I will be staying here for a month.”

“That’s good. That means we could spend more time with each other,” said mom.
I paused for a while. I thought of my pregnancy. Maybe, this is the right time to tell them about it. They all have the right to know.

“Dad, there’s one more thing you need to know,” I said. Maybe, I sounded too serious that Aunt Alice and Uncle Gene stopped for a while in preparing the barbecue grill.

“What’s that, princess?” dad asked.

“I-I-I’m four months pregnant, dad,” I said.

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 55

I arrived at the Milano Malpensa Airport in Milan at exactly 8AM. My good friend, Joseph was there waiting for me. I borrowed a car from him since it’s going to be a long drive from Milan to Venice.

Finally, I arrived at Venice with excitement. I didn’t mind the hour-long drive since all I was thinking about was Nikki and our baby. I checked in at The Hotel Novotel Venezia Mestre Castellana. I was accommodated very well by the hotel staff.

The bell boy took all of my things to my room. I didn’t think of resting. I wanted to find Nikki and tell her all of the things she needs to know.

Venice is a great place and I wouldn’t have to ask why Nikki chose it as a getaway. She’s always been telling me how she wanted to see the place and meet the beautiful people of Italy.
I didn’t waste much time. I went out of the hotel and started asking people about the address that I need to see.

I can’t seem to contain the excitement I was feeling. Finally, I’m going to see Nikki and will be able to tell her how much I miss her and that I love her so much, everything that she needs to hear.

I asked around about the address Erica gave me. It was kind of hard to look for, Via Fratelli Cavanis, Chirignago 37, Venice. Spending one whole day looking for the address wouldn’t seem to be enough, but I can’t give up. I will never give up. I lost Nikki once and I can’t afford to lose her again.

Finally, I found someone who knew where I should go after I had a coffee in the restaurant of the hotel where I was staying.

“Chirignago is 11.75 km from here. I advice you take a cab in going there since you’re not that familiar in getting there. You can’t just be dependent with the maps because some streets are not listed there.”

“Alright. Thank you so much, sir.”

“I suggest you go there tomorrow. It’s quiet dangerous for you to travel alone at night.”

“Yes, I will do that first thing in the morning. Thank you.”

I left the restaurant with a big smile. I need to rest tonight and prepare myself for tomorrow. I’m really excited now. Somehow, I also felt nervous a little. I don’t know what Nikki would say when she finds out that I followed her in Venice, but I can’t think of that right now. All I want is to see her. That’s all.

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 54

It’s been three months since Nikki left. Nobody really knows where she went. I found it hard to believe at first. I don’t know how many times I went to her office to ask if she’s back already. I even asked her best friends Grace, Stephanie, and Erica about her but they all gave me one answer – she’s nowhere to be found.

One day, I decided to go to Nikki’s office to inquire about her whereabouts. I asked her secretary Christina if she knows where Nikki is, but she won’t tell me anything. She just said she doesn’t know Nikki’s location.

I sat down at the waiting area, just a couple of feet away from Christina’s table. After a while, Erica came. I was wondering what she was doing there. She approached Christina as she talked to someone over the phone.

“Yes, I’m already here at Christina’s desk. Okay, wait.” It seemed like the person on the other line was instructing Erica something.

“Christina, Nikki needs you to be reminded of last month’s financial statement to be sent to her email today. Also, you need to call Isabelle and ask her what are the materials needed for the next fashion show. She might buy those stuff in Venice,” said Erica.

I cannot believe I heard it right. Nikki is Venice, Italy. I approached Erica to confirm what I just heard. She was so surprised to see me that she almost dropped her mobile phone. I held her by her shoulders.

“Erica, I know that you know where Nikki is. Can you please tell me where she lives in Venice? Please?” I begged her.

“I-I-I cannot tell you about that, Steve,” she said.

“Please, Erica. I’m dying to see her. You don’t know what I’m going through right now. Please.”

“I really can’t tell you, Steve.”

“Why not?” I asked.

“Because I promised Nikki that I won’t tell you anything about her.”

“Please. I’m already begging you. C’mon, Erica. She’s four months pregnant now. I badly need her. Please.”

She looked straight to my eyes and was trying to examine if I was telling the truth. She then sighed.

“Okay, here’s her address. She’s already in Venice, Steve. Let her live peacefully.”

“We will live together harmoniously, Erica. I promise you that.”

“Just don’t hurt her anymore, Steve, and love her the way you’re supposed to love her.”

“I will really show her what love is,” I told Erica. I took the paper she was holding earlier. It had Nikki’s name and address. I, then, dialed an important number.

“Hello, I need you to book me a flight to Venice, Italy. Yes. That’s today. It should be today. I’ll pay through my credit card. Alright. Thank you,” I was excited to see Nikki.

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 53

“What are you doing here?” I asked. I stood up. I had a couple of drinks already. I almost tripped down, but I quickly regained my balance.

Aaron stood between me and Mark.

“I invited him to come over,” Aaron said.

“You know each other?” I asked Aaron.

“Yes. We’re high school friends. I know you two had a fight over Reese, but there’s something you need to know.”

I sat down where I was seated awhile ago. I ordered another drink from the bartender. Aaron and Mark took their seats and ordered their drinks, too. Aaron asked for two shots of tequila while Mark got a glass of whiskey.

“What is it that I need to hear?” I impatiently asked both of them. The bartender gave us our drinks. Mark took a sip of his whiskey before he spoke.

“I know that I took part in you break up with Reese. We’ve been friends since college and I felt guilty for whatever I did to you.”

“Let’s jump to the bottom line of this conversation. I don’t want no drama and I am not interested to hear whatever you did when I wasn’t around,” I told Mark.

“You know what happened to me and Reese. Well, the bottom line is that I got her pregnant,” Mark said in a serious tone.

“What? You mean?” I shrieked in disbelief.

“The baby she’s carrying right now is mine. I heard her once that she’s gonna tell everyone that you’re responsible for her pregnancy. That’s the reason why she followed you here. I already did a mistake when I slept with her. I can’t afford to make another one by letting you stand as a father to a child that isn’t yours.”

“How did you know it wasn’t mine?” I asked.

“Her best friend, Joan, told me about it. She thought Reese had gone mad.”

I was surprised with what Mark revealed to me. Somehow, my brain can’t absorb everything he said.

“So, you mean Reese deceived me, right?” I asked for confirmation. It was the only thing that I could think of.

“She lied to you, dude, for the nth time. I’m not doing this to clean my name from the mess I made a few months ago. I’m doing this because it’s the only right thing that I could do to you for now,” he said.

I ground my teeth in anger. I don’t know what to do. I’m mad at Reese for lying to me. It was a serious thing and it will never be treated as a joke. She made me believe all of these lies. I lost the most important woman of my life because of her.

Still, I thought it’s not yet too late for me and Nikki to start a life of our own, then I remembered. Nikki is pregnant with Aaron. Everything that I just heard is useless. I won’t be able to get Nikki back.

“This is useless,” I blurted.

“What do you mean useless?” asked Mark.

“I’m happy to know that I don’t have any responsibilities on Reese’s pregnancy, but I can’t change the fact that Nikki is bearing Aaron’s child,” I said.

“That’s another thing you need to know,” Aaron drank the tequila shot. I’m starting to get confused.

“What about it?” I asked.

“Nikki’s child…” Aaron said. He looked at Mark. Mark nod his head in approval. I don’t know what they’re up to, but I’m starting to anticipate for whatever he wants to say. “Nikki’s child is not mine, dude. Since I came here, nothing happened between the two of us. Yes, we go out sometimes, but we never got to a point where we sleep with each other.”

“So, Nikki lied to me? She just told me she’s pregnant so that I’d stay away from her? Why would she do that?” I was really confused already. A lot of things went inside my head and I can’t seem to take all of it at the same time.

“No. She didn’t lie to you,” said Aaron. “She’s pregnant but not with mine. She’s pregnant with your child.”

I was shocked. I was surprised with what I found out. Due to my excitement, I pulled out a thousand bill from my wallet and put it on the table. I didn’t say a word when I was about to leave.

“Where are you going?” Mark asked.

“I’m going to see Nikki,” I said excitedly. Aaron’s facial expression suddenly changed. It became sad and heavy.

“What?” I asked Aaron and Mark as they looked at me.

“Nikki’s gone, Steve,” said Aaron.

“What? What do you mean gone?”

“She’s gone. She left. Nobody knows where she went.”

I felt sad. That night, I went home with a heavy heart. I thought we would end up together, now that I already knew what the truth was. I didn’t give up calling Nikki’s number, but it’s still the same. She’s still out of reach. I wish I could just hold her next to me and tell her that everything’s going to be okay. I miss her so much.

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 52

The last time I saw Nikki was in the supermarket. That was also the last time I’ve heard from her. Though three days had already passed, what happened in the supermarket was still fresh in my memory.

I had already told her how much she means to me and how much I love her, but it was too late already. She already knew about my ‘unwanted’ wedding with Reese… and she’s also pregnant with Aaron.

How I wished she’d know that I never want to marry Reese. I wished she would know that I am marrying Reese because I was told she’d kill herself and the baby if I won’t marry her. There are a lot of things going on in my mind right now. I should’ve fought for Nikki. I could have not lost her if I did. I have a lot regrets right now.

Suddenly, my phone rang. It was an unregistered number. At first, I was hesitant to take the call, but after a while, I took it.

“Hello. Who’s this?” I asked the person on the other line.

“Hey, bud. We need to talk. This is Aaron,” revealed the person.

“What do you want?” I asked in a casual voice.

“It’s about Nikki,” he sighed. I suddenly felt nervous. My heart was pounding.

“What happened to her? Is she alright?” I asked. I got worried after I heard her name.

“Just meet me at Hidden Haven tonight at 7,” said Aaron. He then hung up.

I felt uneasy after the call. I wanted to know what happened to Nikki. I was feeling totally uncomfortable. It’s nerve-wracking. I tried calling Nikki, but she was out of reach. It frightened me more.

I left the office early because I know I won’t be able to finish anything at such state. My emotions were all mixed up.

At 6PM, i was already at the Hidden Haven. I took a seat in front of the bar.

“Scotch. On the rocks,” I told the bartender.

Somehow, the drink made me calm a little. Things were juggling in my mind. I looked around to make myself busy while waiting for Aaron to come. There are quite a couple of people inside the bar. It has become more popular since its first opening. My eyes caught a couple, talking not so far away from where I was. Suddenly, a certain memory flashed inside my head.

It was where I met Nikki and talked for the first time. I was looking at her from the bar, where I can see her at full view. I examined her because she looked exactly the same with the girl I saw at my cousin’s funeral. It was the girl I unconsciously fell in love with. Fortunately, I was right. She was the same girl I saw at the funeral.

On the same night, I had her in my arms. We made love for the whole night. I was happy to have her, but I was also scared of the fact that she was Jazz’s ex-girlfriend. Somehow, I started to feel the pressure of telling her about my relationship with Jazz. She was surprised to find out.
From then on, I promised my late cousin, Jazz, that I would take care of Nikki one day, but that day was already gone. I felt lost.

After awhile, I felt somebody tapped my shoulder. I turned around to see who it was.
It was Aaron with my best friend Mark. What were they doing together?

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 51

I had been thinking about what Stephen had told me in the supermarket. For the first time, he told me he loved me. It felt good to know what he thinks of me, but at the same time I felt bad because it was too late for everything.

I must admit, I felt great when I found out that he loves me, too, but it wasn’t just right for us anymore, especially now that he’s about to marry Reese. I guess I’m still in love with him, which would be unfair to Aaron. The thing between me and Aaron has to end. I could never love Aaron again, not in a way that he loves me.

I wrote a letter for Aaron.

Aaron,

I know that your intentions to me are good. Somehow, we’ve known each other for years. We’d been together for years when we were in college. That thing in the past is still here in me and will forever be remembered.

But what we have right now is not right. I know how important I am to you and I thank you for that, but it kills me everyday to know that I am being unfair to you. As you try to love me in your own way, I’ve been trying to give you the same amount of love, yet I cannot fulfill it in any way.

Aaron, I tried but I failed. Somehow, there’s a part of me that longs for something or someone that I’ve been wanting for so long. You matter to me, but that wouldn’t be enough to fill whatever there is that needs to be filled. I am sorry. I can’t love you.

Tears fell from my eyes. I felt guilt for not showing Aaron the amount of love he deserves. He deserves someone else, and it will come in time.

After I wrote the letter. I packed all of my important stuff inside my bag. I need to get away from this messy place. I know I’ll be back in time, but not now. I need to stay away from Stephen, from Aaron, from Reese, from everyone. I need to get out of my comfort zone and try to start another chapter of my life from a different place. I need to get out of this town as soon as possible.

When I have already packed everything, I called Isabelle to ask her to take care of everything related to the business. I know I should be available on the night of the fashion show, but I can’t wait for a week anymore.

“Hello?” it was Isabelle.

“Hi, Isabelle. It’s Nikki. I’m sorry but I won’t be around for a couple of days starting tomorrow. No, not days, weeks, or maybe months.”

“What are you talking about? The fashion show is due next week. You’re kidding right?”

“No, I’m not. Look, I know that the fashion show is due next week, but I really have to travel. I know you can take care of everything. I believe in you so much. I wouldn’t put you in such position if I know you couldn’t make it.”

“Is there something wrong, Nick?” she asked.

“There is nothing wrong, Isabelle. I know everything was so sudden, but I just have to go some place,” I said.

“Some place where?”

“I wish I could tell you but I can’t. Don’t worry I’ll be back as soon as I can. Just think of it as my indefinite leave. I’ll be communicating with you constantly regarding business matters. For now, I’ll let you handle everything. I’m giving you the authority. I will call everyone about your appointment.”

“Okay,” she sighed. “Whatever you wish princess. Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yes, I’m fine. Thank you Isabelle. You are a great friend.”

“No problem.”

“Thank you. Goodbye,” then I hung up. The next I did, I called Christina and instructed her a few things. I told her she has to work for Isabelle as Isabelle’s second secretary while I’m away. I can’t afford to have Christina lose her job. She has to keep it since she deserves it. I didn’t tell her the reason why I will be gone for a long time and where will I be going.

I rechecked the things I’m going to bring and then called The Parallel Suites management to let them know that I’m going to be away for quite a while. I explained to them that I’d pay my rent in advance and they were fine with it.

After getting ready, I went out of my place. I left the letter for Aaron at the reception area and left for the airport.

I’m going to miss this place but I have to leave. I guess, I’ll be fine staying in Venice for a year.

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 50

I was in the supermarket, buying groceries when I suddenly saw a familiar face from a distance. I tried to look away and went to another direction when he suddenly called me.

“Nikki! Wait!”

It was Stephen. I turned around as if I just heard him. I smiled. Although it was hard for me to do, I had to compose myself in front of him.

“Oh, hi! How are you?” I asked.
Instead of answering, he gave me a bitter smile. I saw pain in his eyes. It was weird because I felt for him.

“I’m sorry for what happened to us,” he said.

“I’m fine, Steve. I’m through with it. There was never an ‘us’ at all… and I’ve already learned to accept that,” I told him. It was painful, I know , but I have to let it out.

He lowered down his head. I looked at him. I’ve realized a lot of changes in him. He looked rugged and awful. It’s like he never cared how to clothe himself properly. He had grown beard on his face. His hair grew a little longer than before. It’s not him at all.

“I have to go now,” I told him. I turned around and pushed my shopping cart.

“I love you, Nikki,” he suddenly said. I froze for a while. I was dumbfounded with what he said. I don’t know what to say or do.

“I have always wanted to tell you that I love you. I had already loved you at Jazz’s letters. I had loved you the way Jazz described you in his writings. I had love you on his necrological mass, when you’re at the podium saying your last goodbye to him.”

“But you weren’t there,” I said as I faced him.

“I was there,” he answered. “I didn’t show myself to anyone at that time because I was too devastated with what happened to my only cousin.”

I was in awe. I ran out of words to say.

“I had loved you, Nick,” he continued, “the first time we spoke in that club. I fell in love with you the first time your skin touched mine,” he cried.

For a moment, I reflected on the things he just said. Maybe, they were true. I was so confused that I wasn’t able to say anything like somebody held my tongue.

He continued, “…but I never told you that I love you because I was too scared. I was scared that I might scare you away or might live forever in Jazz’s shadow. I don’t want to compete with him. I don’t want to be him. I don’t want you to see me or like me or love me because you saw Jazz in me or that you know I’m related to him,” he cried even more. I cannot believe he just let out all the emotions he felt inside. I didn’t know how painful it was for him, but I know there was pain in his heart.

“I know, Nick, that I wasn’t brave enough to tell you how much I love you… and that way, I hurt you without any intentions of hurting you at all. I saw you suffer from such pain and seeing you that way breaks my heart so much.”

I was already crying. I don’t know what I should exactly say. Stephen was crying so hard. It’s probably because of the pain and confusion he was feeling inside him.

“I didn’t tell you because I don’t want you to think that I’m taking advantage of you. I love you so much with all my heart…” he paused and lowered his head again. “I love you and it’s hard to live everyday without telling you that.”

The people in the supermarket were looking at us, as if they’re watching a scene in a movie. What happened next was very surprising to me. Stephen knelt.

“I’m sorry, Nick. Please forgive me for what I’ve caused you. I’m sorry because I brought you into such pain. I’m sorry if I made you feel unloved. I’m sorry.”

“I forgive you, Steve… but the thing about us is just a part of our yesterday. Let’s both move forward. You’re getting married with Reese and I’m pregnant with Aaron. Let’s stop whatever we had started. Let’s start a new life without each other,” I turned and left him. I wiped my tears away. I really felt heavy that I didn’t continue buying groceries for me. I went home and cried for the whole day.

The Greatest Sin of Falling in Love in a Bar 49

I wasn’t surprise to hear my phone ringing. It’s Nikki. I answered the call.

“Hi, hon,” I said. “Are you home already?”

“Yes. I just got home. Where are you?” she asked.

“We’re at the Hidden Haven.” I answered.

“Are you still with Mark?”

“Yeah. We just got here, too.”

“Okay. Don’t stay up late, alright? A couple of beer will do. Don’t drink so much.”

“I won’t, hon. I promise. I’ll call you when I’m about to go home and when I get home. You better go to bed now. Don’t tire yourself too much.”

“Okay. I also need to go to bed. I’m a bit tired.”

“Alright. I love you,” I kissed her goodbye through the phone. Then she hung up. I didn’t have to wait for her to answer me. I know she’s still confused with her feelings right now. I don’t want to pressure her too much. I can wait until she’s ready. I know, in time, she’ll be able to love me again.

In the meantime, I’m here with Mark having a drink. It’s been awhile since the last time we’ve seen each other. Truth is, Mark is my classmate from high school. I don’t know why I didn’t tell Nikki firsthand, but I want to find out what brought Mark to this town.

“It’s been awhile dude. The last time I heard from you was what? High school?” I asked.

“Yeah. You’re right. A lot has changed, I can see. You’ve got a great girl,” he said.

“Thanks. She used to be a college flame. We broke up because I had to travel somewhere. When I got back here, we rekindled the flame,” I chuckled. “So, what brought you here?”

“I’m here looking for a certain person… and your girlfriend happens to know that person.”

“Who?” I was curious so I asked.

“Stephen… Stephen Daniels. Do you know him, too?”

I froze for a while. Why is he looking for Stephen?

“Yeah. I know him. Why? What about him?” I asked.

“He used to be a friend. This is his hometown. When he left our place and came here, we had a misunderstanding. I need to see and have a word with him.”

“Would you mind if I’d ask what it was about?”

“Stephen had a girlfriend. Their relationship got rocky after Stephen found out that his girlfriend is having several affairs with some of our friends.”

“Why didn’t he break up with that girl?”

“He tried to, but he was very much in love with her. Until one day, he caught his girlfriend sleeping at his best friend’s bed. He thought his best friend screwed his girl. He accused them of cheating and deception. He then broke up with his girlfriend and told his best friend not to see him anymore.”

He paused for a while.

“The best friend was me. I need to speak to him. I’ve heard that his ex-girlfriend is here, too. She wants to reconcile with him. I need to see because she’s pregnant with my baby.”

I was surprised with what I just heard.

“Is the girl’s name happens to be Reese?” I asked.

“Y-y-yes. How’d you know her?”

“She had confronted Nikki a few days ago. Nikki told me about everything.”

“I really need to talk to Stephen about this.”

“Nikki has to know first. If there’s one person who needs to know about all of these, it’s Nikki. She’s the most affected in this situation. I’ll walk her through it,” I told Mark. I stood up and left a bill for the beer we had. I told Mark I’d go home ahead of him. A lot of things are inside of my head.

I don’t know if I should tell Nikki about what I just heard. If I won’t tell her and she finds out that I know about all of these, she’d definitely get mad at me. If I’d tell her and she knows the truth, she’d surely leave me for Stephen. I’m really confused now. I love her so much I can’t afford to lose her.
